Week 1 Science Methods Discussion

 This week in lecture and discussion we learned about what something has to have in order to be considered living. We also learned about NGSS and how it compares to Iowa science standards. I am able to relate what we learned this week to my prior learning as we learned about what makes something a living thing when I was in elementary school, so this has been a good refresher to remember what I learned and also build upon my prior knowledge. Although I had prior knowledge on living things, I did not know really anything about NGSS or looking at it from an educators standpoint, which I really enjoyed because I thought it was interesting in how the NGSS compared to the Iowa standards and also how standards play a huge role in what lessons are taught to students. I can apply what I learned this week to my teaching in the future as having a thorough understanding on what the standards are and how to apply them will help me be success in teaching my students content in the future. I also can apply what we learned about living things when I am teaching my future students about what living things are. Overall, what we learned this week in discussion and lecture was very helpful for my future career as a teacher.

    Hey Makenna! I really liked your answers to these questions, adding the picture to back up our findings and answers is awesome! I also think it's interesting that the NGSS is very similar to Iowa Standards, but just a little more in depth! Overall great post!

    Its always nice to have a refresher on things considered "common sense" especially when we spend most of out college careers focusing on advanced concepts. Glad to hear that NGSS has made a positive impact on you despite having never heard of it!

                                         Week 5 Blog 02/19/2025  This week, we had lab on zoom, although we were not able to meet in person, we got a lot done and learned new knowledge and also built on upon prior knowledge throughout our zoom lab. We started the lab by going over the five parts of the 5E model which are: engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and lastly evaluate. We then also talked about the lesson plan assignment for this week just to make sure we all understood what we are supposed to do. Week Four Blog Post

                                              Week 4 Lab Blog 02/12/2025 This week lab was a little different than usual, we had a snow day so the work that we were supposed to do was assigned asynchronously. We learned about a 5E lesson model and what the functions of each section are. Then, we completed an assignment where we had to find the lesson on NGSS with limited information. Next, we had to define the performance expectation of the lesson, and answer 6 reflection questions in regards to 5E. Then, we had to find and write the scientific and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and the disciplinary core ideas.  Thinking back to my prior knowledge, learning about 5E was new to me this week but I found it to be very helpful as a future educator. Week 8 Blog Post

                                              Week 8 03/12/25 Lab  This week in lab we learned a lot. We looked at our fast plants and observed changes we saw. I noticed that the roots of our plant are changing colors and petals are falling off. Then, we shared the baby we created yesterday to the class and talked about dominant and recessive genes. Next, we learned about DNA, mRNA, and Amino Acid sequences and did two simulations that helped deepen our understanding. Then, we did a superhero worksheet where we changed the DNA of a person and made them a superhero and we talked about how mutation happen. Lastly, we talked about our reader response from last week which was about carbon cycles.
