Lab Week Two 01/29/25
This week in lab, we went over quite a bit. We learned more about what makes a living thing considered living and made anchor charts to solidify our knowledge, and I added a photo below of my groups. We learned more about NGSS and SEP, DCIs, and CCCs. We went over how to make and structure an argument so that it is effective and we tested it out on the question of: Is a virus considered a living thing? I put my groups response down below in the photos. Then lastly, we learned about how seeds germinate and grow into a plant and we are starting our own project of that by germinating lentil seeds, as seen in the photos below.
Today, what we learned in lab I was able to relate back to my prior knowledge. Last week in lecture we went over what makes a living thing considered living and I also have prior knowledge from my time doing science in elementary school, however it was a good refresher to learn the 8 core characteristics for living things. The structure of an argument was also something that I could connect to prior knowledge as it is something I learned when learning how to write essays in elementary and middle school, and also when creating my science fair projects in 5th, 6th, and 7th grade. The information we covered today in class about NGSS I was partially able to relate back to prior knowledge as we started learning about it last week in lab, but we went more in detail about SEP, DCIs, and CCCs which added to my knowledge. Germinating the lentil seed is something that I can connect back to prior knowledge as we did projects similar in elementary school. Overall, lab this week was a good refresher on prior knowledge I have from my own experiences as a student. I can apply what I learned today in lab to my teaching in the future as everything we learned is very useful. It is important for me as an educator to have a good understanding of NGSS and the different components within so I can make sure I am providing my students with the most enriching education possible. I will also teach my students the structure of an argument whether it is in science or reading so the refresher we did today was very helpful for my future career as a teacher. I will be able to apply my knowledge of the 8 core characteristics of what makes a living thing considered living when I am teaching my future students, and lastly I will be able to use the germinating seed lab as a good experiment with my students. Overall, this lab was very beneficial to my future career as a teacher.

Hi Makenna! I agree that learning more about the NGSS is crucial for our future students. Having a good understanding is important so we are able to successfully teach students the science content. The experiment we conducted in class will be super cool to incorporate in your future classroom! Great post!
ReplyDeleteHi Makenna! I enjoyed reading your post and agree that today was very beneficial and a good refresher for our prior knowledge! I think it is important that we refresh our memory to have a strong understanding of these concepts as future teachers. I will use this information and the NGSS standards that we reviewed while creating lesson plans for my future students. Similar to you, I think the germinating seeds lab would be a good experiment for our students. Great post!
