Week Four Blog Post
Week 4 Lab Blog 02/12/2025
This week lab was a little different than usual, we had a snow day so the work that we were supposed to do was assigned asynchronously. We learned about a 5E lesson model and what the functions of each section are. Then, we completed an assignment where we had to find the lesson on NGSS with limited information. Next, we had to define the performance expectation of the lesson, and answer 6 reflection questions in regards to 5E. Then, we had to find and write the scientific and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and the disciplinary core ideas.
Thinking back to my prior knowledge, learning about 5E was new to me this week but I found it to be very helpful as a future educator. NGSS, I am somewhat getting familiar with due to this class and us exploring it and learning about it often in class. The topic of the lesson we were working on today which was insects and their colonies, specifically bees and ants is something that I remember learning about in elementary school and the lesson seemed pretty similar to this one, learning about their homes, social interactions, etc. Overall, I was able to relate some of what we learned this week to prior knowledge, and some was new knowledge!
I can apply what I learned today to my future career as a teacher because it is very important that I have a clear understanding of lesson plans, performance expectations, CCC's, DCI's, and SEP's, and also 5E lesson functions in order to provide my students with the best possible learning experience and outcome. I also can use the topic of the lesson- learning about different insect colonies as that is something I am sure I will teach at some point in my career. Overall, this week was very beneficial to my future career as a teacher.
Answers to the lab work are below. I printed the assignment out and wrote my answers with pencils, and scanned my document back into a PDF to attach to my post.:)

Hi Makenna! I also remember learning about animals, insects, and their habitats in elementary school. It is weird learning it from the other side in terms of making sure we meet the standards and core concepts.
ReplyDeleteHello Makenna, I agree this weeks lab was a very different format, but I was still able to learn a lot about the 5E model. I had very similar answers as you on the worksheets you attached!
ReplyDeleteI think this weeks material was very useful as a future educator. As you stated, "I can apply what I learned today to my future career as a teacher because it is very important that I have a clear understanding of lesson plans, performance expectations, CCC's, DCI's, and SEP's, and also 5E lesson functions in order to provide my students with the best possible learning experience and outcome. " In order for us to give our students engaging lessons that spark their curiosity, we need to understand these critical concepts. Great post!
It sounds like you had a productive week, despite the snow day! I agree that learning about the 5E lesson model is a valuable tool for future educators. It’s great that you’re already becoming familiar with NGSS and its components, as it will definitely help you design effective lesson plans. The reflection on insect colonies like bees and ants also highlights the connection between prior knowledge and new learning—especially since it's a topic you remember from elementary school. I’m sure this experience will enhance your ability to create engaging and well-structured lessons in the future. Great insights!
ReplyDeleteHi Makenna! I agree with you that the 5E can be very useful for creating clear and organized lesson plans in our futures. In elementary school, we just learned about the subjects we were taught, but now we have to consider how to structure lessons to meet those expectations. Great post!
ReplyDeleteHi Makenna! I agree the 5E model seems it is going to be very using when creating lesson plans and it ensure they will be clear and organized. Great post!
