Week 12 Lab 04/16/25
This week in lab, we started off by going over our homework from last week and we shared three things we learned, two things we found interesting, and a question we still have. My groups question was how do we teach more abstract concepts to students more effectively?
Then, we did an activity where we tested a variety of objects such as a large marble, a small marble, a large paper clip, a small paper clip, a large wooden block, and a small wooden block, a big ball of foil, and a small piece of foil, and many more items. We did a variety of tests so we could find out whether the objects were magnetic, if they could conduct energy, their mass, their volume, and if they sunk or floated in water. I learned a lot from this lab, as I have never really looked much into what every day objects are capable of such as conducting electricity, and we found that the paper clips and aluminum foil could conduct electricity. I also found it interesting that the foil was not magnetic, for some reason I thought that it would have been.
What we learned in this lab was somewhat of a refresher of my prior knowledge as I have done experiments to conduct electricity when I was younger in my science classes, and finding the mass and volume of objects and whether they sink or float, but the last time I did experiments like the ones we did in lab I was much younger so this was a good refresher for me. I was definitely surprised by some things, for example I thought that the wooden blocks would sink but they floated on top of the water which also made it hard to find their volume since they didn't sink. We had to use and overflow cup and a straw to accurately find the volume of the blocks. Overall, this week was very fun and a good refresher of what I have learned in my younger years.I can use what we learned this week in my future career as a teacher as all of the experiments we did this week, as I will definitely need to know how to teach my students how to do experiments that involve finding mass, volume, conducting electricity
, etc.
