Week 15 Blog

                                               Week 15 Lab 05/07/25

This week in lab, we started off by reviewing the experiments we did a few weeks ago and talked about which ones we felt the most confident in. I feel the most confident in the condensation, why ice melts faster on wood, and the plunger on the table. I still have some questions about the M&M melting activity because I feel like every time we did it, the results were different. Overall, all of those activities we did were very fun and I learned a lot doing them. Then, we spent an hour designing a lab for students in 5th grade and how matter is conserved. We used baking soda and vinegar and a balloon to show how the mass does not change, even after a reaction happens. However, after doing the experiment with the balloon multiple times, the weight changed. Which was due to buoyancy, and we then pivoted and used a little test tube to drop the baking soda into the bottle and then using the cap and the weight stayed the exact same. Then, we talked with other tables about our experiment and everyone kind of went through a similar thing when figuring out how to keep the total weight of the matter the same.

Thinking back to my prior knowledge, I do remember learning about the conservation of matter but I have never done an experiment like this before. This experiment was a really good way to visualize the conservation of matter and also a good way to problem solve since we struggled to prove the conservation of mass to be true using the balloon.

I can apply what we learned this week to my future career as a teacher in many ways. The first being that this lab was a good way to hone in on my problem solving skills as we could have just said the balloon was "good enough" but with science that is not the case so we had to problem solve how we could actually prove the conservation of mass law to be true and not just "good enough". Also, this is a good experiment I could use in my future classroom with my students. Overall, I can apply what we learned in this lab in my future career.
