Week 6: Geologic Time
1. What did you do in lab today?
Today in lab, we started off by doing a formative assessment on how we thought the course was going so far. Then, we did some review over the sun, the moon, and stars. This was super helpful to me because it helped solidify and my knowledge and we had time to ask questions to clarify before the exam. Then, we did an activity on preconceptions where we placed where we thought things happened on the timeline of life as we know it, which was fun because we got to move around the room. Then, we got to explore on Earth-viewer and chose one cool thing that happened in the history of the Earth and place it on the timeline. Then, we talked about Earth's history, and one analogy that was super helpful to me was looking at it like a clock. I will attach the slide (similar but not the exact same) from the lab presentation. Overall, I learned a lot and feel more prepared for the exam on Thursday.2. What was the big question?
What are the significant events in the history of the Earth?
3. No discussion this week (exam)
Online Chapter:
1. What did you learn?
I learned more about the history and the origin of the Earth as a whole, and how life came to be, as we know it today. I learned that there is something called the "Snowball Earth" which is where the Earth has frozen over completely, and that this has happened at least 3 time. This was really cool to learn about, as I can hardly imagine this happening. I also learned more information about the order things came to be on Earth, such as aquatic plants coming to be 600 million years ago, 65-200 million years ago dinosaurs lived, etc. Overall, this chapter taught me a lot about the introduction to the origin to the Earth.
2. What was most helpful?
I would say the photo of the "Geologic Time" of Earth. This really helped me visualize how and when everything was happening and breaks it down into simpler terms.
3. What do you need more information on?
What was the first prokaryote? I want to know more about the first cells on Earth.
4. What questions/concerns/comments do you have?
If there were eukaryotes and prokaryotes on Earth before dinosaurs, did dinosaurs evolve into actual dinosaurs?
