Week 8 Blog Post
Week 8 03/12/25 Lab
This week in lab we learned a lot. We looked at our fast plants and observed changes we saw. I noticed that the roots of our plant are changing colors and petals are falling off. Then, we shared the baby we created yesterday to the class and talked about dominant and recessive genes. Next, we learned about DNA, mRNA, and Amino Acid sequences and did two simulations that helped deepen our understanding. Then, we did a superhero worksheet where we changed the DNA of a person and made them a superhero and we talked about how mutation happen. Lastly, we talked about our reader response from last week which was about carbon cycles. Overall, we learned a lot this week in lab.I can relate to what we learned this week to my prior knowledge as I remember learning about DNA, mRNA, and Amino Acids in high school. We did an activity once where we looked at our own DNA using our spit. It was cool. Overall, everything we learned this week were things I could relate to my prior knowledge as a student.
Question: What are some things that you did not know were actually genetic mutations?

Hi Makenna, your fast plant looks so great. Unfortunately ours is still only sprouting. I also remember learning about DNA and mRNA in high school. This unit really reminds me of freshman year biology. However, the activities we do brings a new perspective into my mind and helps me think about how I can teach my students these topics.
ReplyDeleteHi Makenna! I noticed our fast plant was dying and got concerned. I did not realize that our plants were going to die so fast to then give us seeds. Our plants leaves are brown and grey plus they are falling off. I agree with you that everything we learned this week was included in knowledge I learned through high school!
ReplyDeleteHi Makenna! My group's plant also has petals falling off, and the roots are changing colors. Additionally, I like how you connected what you learned to your prior knowledge, especially recalling your high school experience with DNA and mRNA.
